Start a Job Search DocumentI would suggest starting a Word document and titling it something like "Job Search Progress". Every day, update what you've done for your job search. For example you may update this document with which BioPharmGuy pages you have gotten through or where you left off on a particular BioPharmGuy page. Maybe you'd prefer to include all the company sites you've visited each day. Whatever your chosen methodology, you should keep track of your efforts. In addition to web search information, document any contact you may have with company representatives. Take notes during or after any phone interviews (do this during an interview very quietly and only if it won't distract you). Directly after any in-person interviews write down everything you can remember about each meeting with company reps. Make your notes as exhaustive as possible. Keep track of which people you talked to, anything and everything they told you (including personal information) and transfer this information to your Job Search document. This proved to be useful to me in refining some interview responses to questions that may have stumped me in earlier interviews. It also helped in remembering personal information I was told during phone interviews. In one instance I was able to remember a person I had previously talked to over the phone was a big baseball fan, so when there was an opportunity for small talk during my on-site interview, I made sure to push the conversation in this direction. Don't forget, people want to work with other people with similar interests! Getting work is hard work My opinion is that in today's competitive job market you simply can't rely on every company posting every job to the big search engines. You MUST show some initiative and do some work to get a good job. Keeping track of all your hard job search work can prove very useful not only in your current job search, but in a job search further down the line. -BPG April 13, 2008 |
